The taught elements of the Masters course centers around 8 15-credit modules; MSc students take all 8 modules, MRes students choose 4 out of 8 modules (in consultation with the Course Director). Four modules run in the Autumn Term (September/October to December), four modules run in the Spring Term (January to April). Students work on their projects in the Summer Term and the rest of the summer. Vivas are held in September (part-time students are viva'd in their second year).

Each course module comprises ten sessions. Most sessions last three hours, and consist of a lecture followed by a practical session in a dedicated computer lab. Evening sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday at 6-9pm and are typically attended by all students; daytime sessions are on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 2-5pm. (Occasionally part-time students opt to take daytime modules instead of evening modules; applicants who want to consider taking a non-standard route through one of the Masters courses should consult the relevant Course Director.)
